Ingredients

  • For the meat sauce:
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 onion, chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 pound ground beef
    • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
    • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
    • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 teaspoon dried basil
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the cheese filling:
    • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
    • 1 egg
    • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
  • For assembly:
    • 12-15 lasagna noodles (best lasagna noodles are the no-boil type for convenience)
    • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Steps / Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the ground beef and Italian sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Drain excess fat if necessary, then add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat and let simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. In a separate bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and parsley. Mix until smooth.
  7. To assemble, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce at the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  8. Place a layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, a third of the mozzarella cheese, and another layer of meat sauce.
  9. Repeat the layers: noodles, remaining ricotta, another third of mozzarella, and meat sauce. Top with a final layer of noodles, the remaining meat sauce, and the rest of the mozzarella cheese.
  10. Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, spray the foil with cooking spray) and bake for 25 minutes.
  11. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  12. Let the lasagna cool for about 15 minutes before slicing to allow the layers to set.

  • Use high-quality homemade lasagna ingredients, especially the meats and cheeses, for a richer flavor.
  • If you prefer a vegetarian version, substitute the meat sauce with a mix of sautéed vegetables, such as mushrooms, zucchini, and spinach.
  • To save time, you can prepare the meat sauce a day in advance and let it chill in the refrigerator overnight.
  • For optimal flavor, allow the lasagna to rest after baking. This will help the layers to set, making it easier to serve.
  • Leftover lasagna can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) until heated through.

Variations

If you’re looking to customize your Famous Lasagna, here are some delicious variations: Check out our related guide for more tips.

  • For a creamy twist, add a layer of béchamel sauce between the layers.
  • Incorporate different cheeses, such as gouda or provolone, for added flavor.
  • Create a Mexican-inspired lasagna by using tortillas instead of noodles and layering with salsa and black beans.
  • For a lighter option, try zucchini or eggplant slices in place of pasta sheets for a gluten-free experience.

Serving Suggestions

Serve your lasagna with a crisp side salad and garlic bread for a complete meal. A glass of red wine, such as Chianti, pairs beautifully with the rich flavors of the dish. For an added touch, sprinkle fresh basil or parsley on top before serving, enhancing both the presentation and flavor.
