Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder. Add the Greek yogurt and warm water. Stir until a dough begins to form.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 3-4 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time.
- Rest the Dough: Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 20-30 minutes. This will make it easier to roll out.
- Divide and Roll: After resting, divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then use a rolling pin to roll each ball into a circle or oval about 1/4 inch thick.
- Prepare Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, mix the melted butter and minced garlic. Set aside.
- Cook the Flatbread: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place one rolled-out flatbread onto the hot skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until bubbles start to form and the bottom is golden brown. Flip the flatbread and cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Brush with Garlic Butter: Remove the cooked flatbread from the skillet and immediately brush with the garlic butter mixture. Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
- Repeat: Repeat the process with the remaining dough portions.
Tips for Perfect Garlic and Butter Flatbread
- Rest the Dough: Letting the dough rest helps relax the gluten, making it easier to roll out and resulting in a softer flatbread.
- Use a Hot Skillet: Make sure your skillet is hot before adding the flatbread. This ensures a nice golden-brown color and a fluffy texture.
- Brush Immediately: Brushing the flatbread with garlic butter as soon as it comes off the skillet helps the butter soak in and enhances the flavor.
Recipe Variations
- Cheese-Stuffed Flatbread: Add a sprinkle of shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese to the dough before rolling it out for a cheesy twist.
- Herb Flatbread: Add 1 teaspoon of dried oregano or thyme to the dough for extra herb flavor.
- Spicy Garlic Flatbread: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the garlic butter mixture for a bit of heat.
FAQs
Q: Can I use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour?
A: Yes, you can substitute whole wheat flour for all-purpose flour, but the texture may be slightly denser. You may need to add a little more water to achieve the right consistency.
Q: How do I store leftover flatbread?
A: Store leftover flatbread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet or microwave before serving.
Q: Can I freeze the dough?
A: Yes, you can freeze the dough. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and place it in a freezer bag. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before rolling out and cooking.
Serving Suggestions
- With Hummus: Serve the flatbread warm with a side of hummus for dipping.
- With Soups or Stews: Pair with hearty soups or stews for a comforting meal.
- As a Wrap: Use the flatbread to wrap grilled meats, veggies, or falafel for a delicious sandwich alternative.
