Ingredients
Scale:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup homemade caramel sauce
1 teaspoon vanilla extract for frosting
1 cup chopped pecans
Additional caramel sauce for drizzling
Instructions
Preheat your oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
Combine dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
Add wet ingredients: Pour in the milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix on medium speed for 2 minutes until the batter is smooth.
Add boiling water: Carefully stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.
Pour batter into pans: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
Bake: Place the pans in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool: Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.
Prepare the caramel frosting: In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and fluffy, then gradually add powdered sugar and caramel sauce until well combined.
