Homemade Amish Sweet Bread is much more than just a recipe; it’s a hearty tradition passed down through generations. This sweet bread, with its soft and fluffy texture, is perfect for breakfast, snacks, or as a delightful addition to any meal.
Ingredients
Scale:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
1 1/2 cups warm milk (about 110°F)
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon melted butter for brushing
Cinnamon sugar for sprinkling
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Add the melted butter and eggs to the yeast mixture, stirring gently to combine.
In another bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until the dough starts to form.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Once risen, punch down the dough to release the air. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
Cover the pan with a towel and let it rise again for another 30-45 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) during this time.
Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and brush the top with melted butter. Allow it to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
