This dish combines the rich flavors of homemade meatballs with the convenience of a slow cooker, making it an ideal choice for busy families or anyone looking for a comforting meal without the fuss.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs for a gluten-free option)
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 large egg
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)
1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, egg, garlic, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Mix until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the meatballs tender.
Using your hands, shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet as you form them.
For added flavor, you can brown the meatballs in a skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. This step is optional but recommended.
Pour the marinara sauce into the bottom of the slow cooker. If desired, stir in a teaspoon of sugar to balance the acidity of the sauce.
Carefully place the meatballs in the slow cooker, ensuring they are covered with sauce. This helps to keep them moist and flavorful during cooking.
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. The meatballs are done when they reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) and are tender.
Gently stir the meatballs in the sauce before serving. They can be enjoyed on their own or as a topping for spaghetti, in hearty meatball subs, or as flavorful meatball appetizers for gatherings.
