Salisbury Steak is a classic comfort food combining pan-seared beef patties with a savory mushroom gravy, creating a meal rich in flavor.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound ground beef (preferably 80% lean)
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and black pepper to taste
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
2 cups beef broth
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and black pepper to taste
Creamy mashed potatoes
Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into an oval patty.
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the patties. Cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side until a deep golden brown crust forms. Remove the patties and set aside.
In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until translucent and lightly caramelized, about 7-8 minutes.
Add the sliced mushrooms to the onions and continue to cook until they release moisture and begin to brown, approximately 5 minutes.
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms, stirring constantly for about 1 minute to form a roux.
Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and black pepper.
Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer, allowing it to thicken while stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes.
Return the beef patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover and cook for an additional 10 minutes.
Serve the Salisbury Steak over creamy mashed potatoes, generously spooning the onion gravy on top. Garnish with chopped parsley.
