A classic Southern comfort food known for its creamy texture and savory flavor that complements flaky biscuits.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound breakfast sausage
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 to 3 cups whole milk
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
Flaky biscuits for serving
Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
In a large skillet, over medium heat, add the breakfast sausage. Use a wooden spoon to break it up into small pieces as it cooks. Cook until the sausage is browned and thoroughly cooked, about 5 to 7 minutes.
Once the sausage is cooked, sprinkle the flour over the sausage in the skillet. Stir well to coat the sausage in the flour and cook for about 1 to 2 minutes.
Gradually pour in the milk, whisking continuously. Start with 2 cups and add more later if necessary. Continue stirring as the mixture begins to thicken, about 5 to 7 minutes.
Add the black pepper, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder (if using). Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
Remove the skillet from heat. Serve the hot sausage gravy over warm, flaky biscuits and garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
