Ingredients
Scale:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
4 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
1/2 cup milk (for frosting)
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large sheet pan, typically an 18x13 inch pan.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
In a separate bowl, combine the melted butter, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan, spreading it evenly.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting by melting the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then stir in the cocoa powder.
Remove from heat, then add the milk, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth and creamy.
Once the cake is out of the oven, let it cool for about 10 minutes. Pour the frosting over the warm cake, spreading it evenly.
Allow the cake to cool completely before slicing into squares and serving.
