A comforting and decadent dessert made with stale bread cubes soaked in a rich custard, baked to golden perfection. Perfect for holiday gatherings or as a sweet conclusion to any meal.
Ingredients
Scale:
6 cups of stale bread cubes (French or Italian bread works well)
1 cup of granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup melted butter
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
Caramel sauce for drizzling
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread cubes, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss to evenly distribute.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, vanilla extract, and melted butter until fully incorporated.
Pour the wet mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring each piece is thoroughly soaked. If adding raisins, scatter them evenly.
Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
Transfer the bread mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly. Press down gently.
Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
Remove from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before serving. Drizzle with caramel sauce if desired.
