A classic American comfort food dish that originated from the traditional Amish community. This hearty and flavorful recipe has been passed down through generations, and its rich history and cultural significance make it a beloved favorite among many.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons butter
2 cups mashed potatoes (optional)
Chopped fresh parsley or thyme (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
In a large skillet, cook the chopped onion and minced garlic over medium heat until they're softened and translucent.
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix everything together with your hands or a wooden spoon until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the meat tough and dense.
Add the cooked onion and garlic to the meat mixture and mix until just combined.
Transfer the meat mixture to a 9x13 inch baking dish and shape it into a rectangular steak.
In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth and flour. Pour the mixture over the meat steak, making sure that it's evenly coated.
Dot the top of the steak with the butter.
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the steak is cooked through and the top is golden brown.
While the steak is baking, prepare the mashed potatoes according to your recipe. You can also use store-bought mashed potatoes or omit them altogether.
Once the steak is done, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.
