Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting, hearty dish that embodies the essence of traditional Amish cooking. This recipe combines the simplicity of ground beef with the rich flavors of savory gravy and creamy mushroom sauce, creating a meal that feels like a warm hug on a plate.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
1 large egg
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup sliced mushrooms
2 cups beef broth
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
Form the mixture into small patties, about 1/2 inch thick. Set aside.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté until they are golden brown, about 5 minutes.
Add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet. Bring to a simmer.
Carefully place the hamburger patties into the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over them. Cook for about 5 minutes until they are browned on the bottom.
Transfer the skillet contents to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. If the gravy is too thin, mix cornstarch with a little water and stir it into the gravy to thicken.
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
Remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top. Bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
